After (too much) deliberation, I have three answers. Sorry. My first is "To Make You Feel My Love" by Garth Brooks. This was our first dance to at our wedding reception. Our friend Tony played it for us with his guitar and it was just so special... just a beautiful memory.
My second answer is "What A Wonderful World." This song was playing in the car as we brought our Gracie home from the hospital almost ten years ago. I remember the sun was shining as Ben drove us home through Forest Park. The combination of the lyrics to the song and the realization that we were parents got me emotional (well, and crazy new-mama hormones....) got me emotional. The song still makes me teary.
Finally, a more recent memory, is the song "I and Love and You" by the Avett Brothers. Ben got me hooked on the Avett Brothers and we always listen to them together on road trips or working on projects around the house together. This song in particular reminds me of stealing some moments together, just the two of us, while on a trip with a bunch of friends to Franklin, TN last year. I could never hear this song and not think of Ben.
Pachelbel's Canon in D. It always makes me think of snowy days in Williamsport when we were first married. We would fire up the wood stove in the family room, listen to classical music, and read when the snow was a foot deep outside.

"I'll Make Love to You"- by Boyz 2 Men- (It is way more innocent then it seems) When Leslie and I first started dating this song was very popular and hearing it takes me back to my parents basement where we almost wore the CD out.
"In My life" by the beatles- It was one of the songs that was in our wedding video. I remember vividly sitting at the wedding with the lights dimmed watching the video with my lovely wife and all of the people I loved around me.
i can probably think of 100 others, music sparks so many memories.
I didn't have much trouble coming up with a song - but it is not a "love song" sort of story...
Dancing in the 70's was really an indivdual activity - no one really touched (except in slow songs) or coordinated their moves. Paul was a really good dancer, he was never one of those guys who was afraid to get up and dance when the music was fast. Our first date was to homecoming and I remember being impressed that he danced when no one else wanted to!I was not a very good dancer, but I would watch how he moved (especially his feet)and follow him and felt like together we moved pretty well.
When you have known and loved someone since they were 19, the image of them that you have in your mind doesn't necessarily match reality. Watching Paul dance to Bob Seger's "Old Time Rock and Roll" was a sight to behold. In my mind, his hair is long and he has a mustache and sideburns - he moves effortlessly around the dance floor, lost in the beat of the music.
When I hear it on the radio, it makes me smile and remember that wild young man who had a wolf skin coat and shoulder length hair. My dad used to say that 18 year old eyes looked out of every 60 year old face. "Old Time Rock and Roll" reminds me that underneath that grey hair and Fox News conservative still beats the heart of that rock and roll dancer. And it makes me smile...
Zac Brown has been a favorite of both me and Will since early in our relationship. They were pretty new with only chicken fried playing on the radio and we were able to go see them in Springfield at the convention center (which tells you how new they were) it was a small venue and pretty intimate. We went just the two of us. Pretty much the whole album the Foundation especially "Whatever it is" reminds me of this wonderful time. We wanted it for our first dance but its not really a slow dance song. I still consider this our song.
Second is "Feels like Home" Chantal Kreviazuk. I first heard this from Leslie (from Gilmore Girls). I had it on some mix cds, I liked it but never gave it much thought. After meeting Will I was making him a mix cd (how high school of me) and I came across this song in my itunes. I realized this was exactly how I felt about him:
"If you knew how lonely my life has been And how long I've been so alone And if you knew how I wanted someone to come along And change my life the way you've done"
I know it sounds a bit pitiful and I never considered myself that type but I had begun to think I wasn’t going to meet someone and had somewhat accepted it and had started to look for good enough. Then he came along. It get to me every time I hear it and I'm a bit teary even typing this.
I had LONG wanted our first dance to be to "Still the One" by Orleans. First of all, it is a bit out of the box for a first dance- an uptempo tune instead of the typical slow number. But what always gets me are the lyrics- they are SO very representative of my relationship with Will. We've been together for a long time, and sometimes we argue, but at the end of the day we have fun and he's still the one. I was dead-set on having that as our first dance and kept it a secret from everyone, just excited for that surprise moment on the dance floor.
Unfortunately, the band that we hired let me know that the song just wouldn't sound good if they played it. Apparently there were too many elements involved and he thought we would end up disappointed with their rendition. He did offer to play "Still the One" through an iPod for us. At that point, I let him know that if we had to dance to a song on an iPod, we would rather have them play "January Wedding" since The Avett Brothers are a little lesser-known.
We were so so excited that the band (more or less) learned the song for us and actually played "January Wedding" while we danced! It was certainly not a perfect rendition, and the lead singer Percy had to read the lyrics off a sheet of paper...but it was a wonderful moment.
Other songs with significant meaning-not deep significance, but will always make me smile and think of Will when I hear them:
In the Ghetto
Up on Cripple Creek
We Didn't Start the Fire
Molly O'Malley's
Superman
Knee Deep
Where the Boat Leaves From
One Particular Harbor
Next this is not a fair question. those of us that have seen at least 5 different decades, a multitude of different culture evolution changes have a much larger and more difficult choice to make.
That is a cheaters way of saying that i am going to play the atrist card rather that song. That is the Python perogative!
Harry Chapin has to be the one artist absolutely woven throughout all phases of patti and my life. his songs have always stated "should have, could have or will have" and our life together has pretty much proved out along these lines of this philosiphy. The song that hold a special place in my heart and started us on the Chapin road is "a better place to be"
Paul
Of course there's always Meatloaf's "Paradise By the Dashboard Light" but that only occurs after multiple beers at karaoke parties :-)
Our wedding song is one that has extra special meaning -- as well as the last song of our reception. Our wedding song was 'Baby' by Robert Bradley's Blackwater Surprise. Not a well known song, but one that I love SO much. I discovered this band while listening to public radio during grad school in Detroit right around the time I met Scott. I have a memory (which may not be entirely accurate ... but I think it is) of sitting on Scott's lap at an election party at a friend's house (and probably singing this song to myself) and telling him that I thought this was the perfect first dance song (it bumped My Little Corner of the World by Yo La Tengo). We were only about a month into dating at the time but we both remembered that conversation and made it our first song. Though we were very conflicted between that song and Ben Fold's The Luckiest, which I think I listed at least a dozen times consecutively the first time I heard it (sitting in our office in one of our apartments in Monroe with Scott each of us working on our computers -- he was playing it off his computer and I made him play it again and again) I found it so beautiful and haunting. Our DJ made that our last song of the night. Both songs still bring up so many memories.
Another favorite is Sweet Virginia by Gomez ... which I sing along with loudly while conducting the music with one finger in the air (best heard at the Pageant with Scott while drinking the best chocolate martinis ever ...) yep, like everyone else I could probably just keep going and going ...
Thanks for the musical trip down memory lane ... I think I may go listen to some of these now
However, we also love ALL Garth Brooks songs!
Henry's current fav is the song "Home" by Philip Philips". Kind of representative of our life at the moment.
