(a day early because I am thinking I will be busy tomorrow getting things ready for our weekend camping trip…..)
1. I feel like Facebook land is oddly full of weird cryptic messages this morning. Lots of "I hope this is the week things turn around for me." and "Well that didn't go the way it was supposed to." and "Fingers crossed that everything today goes the way I need it to."
Maybe it is grumpy of me, but what in the world is the point of posts like this? Is it attention seeking? Does she need all of her 500+ Facebook friends to then wonder, "hmmmm… I wonder what is going on?" and then consequently respond with things like, "I don't know what is going on, but I love you!" Is she kind of the adult version of the needy girl in high school who would dramatically sit down at the table in the cafeteria and sigh just so everyone would ask what was wrong? I find the whole thing slightly irritating.
There. Done grumbling for this post.
2. We have completed our newborn sitting gig. We had Harvey for five days of the past week. What a sweet, sweet, adorable baby! Also, what a very good baby fix that was! It was a good reminder that while cute beyond belief, babies are a lot of work.
3. This could be an entire post of its own- and probably will be for as much thought as I have had on the topic lately- but adult friendship is hard. I am starting to feel like your mid-thirties is the place where friendships go to die. Why must it be so hard to get together with people? It feels like a major accomplishment these days if I am able to successfully plan an adult outing that actually happens and is not cancelled last minute.
Ben and I had plans to meet some friends for drinks last Friday night after our anniversary dinner. The friends texted to cancel as we were leaving the restaurant to go met them with the only excuse being they were exhausted from a busy week at work. It is hard not to feel a little done with people like this.
Hmmm... I guess I was not done grumbling for this post. But I am now. I promise. :)
4. On a related and happier note, I am looking forward to fun weekend plans in Illinois. We have a camping trip on Friday night, a cookout and fireworks with friends on Saturday night, and Father's Day fun with my dad and Paul on Sunday. We are all excited for Friday morning to get here to start the fun.
5. On a still related note, I am really enjoying being part of a group of women who meet once a month to talk and drink and craft. We've been at it for about a year now and last Thursday's Craft Night was one of my favorite yet. Such good conversation! I love the chance to be off the mommy clock and to just talk with other women. It is so good for me.
6. As a family, we are living a baseball FULL life these days. None of us were too sad last night when Gracie's game (our seventh game in four days) was cancelled because of rain. We are playing hooky this weekend and I think a weekend off of baseball will make us all a lot more energized to finish the rest of the season. Having three players in the family is fun, but it makes for so much time at the park!
7. Have I mentioned how much I love summer days? This relaxed schedule really suits us. I am currently blogging while Katie sits next to me playing Calico Critters. Gracie is reading a magazine on the couch and the boys are running around the family room playing some Pokemon game they've made up. We have nowhere we have to be all day, but have plans to leave for the library when it opens in a bit.
8. Katie has begun to be fearful of many things. She wakes up frequently during the night because of bad dreams. This week we've dealt with monsters and scary dogs. It is rare for her to sleep through the night anymore. It will be nice when this phase passes.
9. I've hit my stride with the etsy shop. I feel like I've found the right amount of business to satisfy me. I make just enough spending money to make it worth my time, but I don't have so many orders that I ever feel overwhelmed. I typically work on etsy stuff for about an hour a day, which is great this summer to give me something to do while the kids are occupied without taking away from my precious summer time with them at home.
10. I read a quote on Pinterest yesterday that I thought was great. "Don't compare your behind-the-scenes to someone else's highlights reel." It seems like the 2014 version of Roosevelt's "Comparison is the thief of joy."
11. My children are blueberry eating monsters these days. We have been through three large clams of blueberries in the past week. I can't complain, though, since I am pretty sure I have even eaten much more than my share. Blueberries on top of vanilla frozen yogurt with a little granola on top for crunch = perfection, especially when eaten on the couch while watching "The Americans" on Netflix after the kids go to bed. :)
12. Gracie is about to begin playing the flute in the sixth grade band. It makes me so happy to see her playing the instrument that I love.
