weekend project

Oh, how I love making our house ours.

When we moved in, there was a brown carpet runner going up the stairs that was stained and gross. I spent an entire afternoon pulling up both it and the hundreds of staples used to secure it. We intended to replace it eventually, but there was always something more pressing in the budget and month after month after month, the project got put off. To tide us over, I cleaned the stairs as best I could and painted the walls a pretty gray color.

Unfortunately, over time we learned that the stairs without any sort of runner or tread were a little slippery, so we knew that adding something to them was not just a cosmetic fix, but also something that would make our house more safe. There was lots of shopping to find something that matched our style and budget. Ben and I agreed that we wanted something colorful but still classic and very durable so that we are not redoing this project anytime soon.  I had my eye on a couple of Dash and Albert runners for months, but they were more of a splurge than we could justify. Around Christmas, though, I was able to combine a code, an online sale, and a free shipping special to buy the two runners we would need for just over two hundred and fifty dollars. I was so excited!

Sunday's snowy day was the perfect chance to finally get started on the project. I painted the stair backs and the walls a bright white since the gray I painted them last year did not match the runner. Once the paint was dry, Ben and his adorable five year old helper got to work installing the padding and runner. There was a little bit of a learning curve, but once he got it figured out, I was impressed with how quickly he was finished. While he was installing the runner, I painted and distressed a couple of mirrors we had in the basement to hang as decoration with the hopes that they would make the space brighter. This morning I painted the door at the top of the stairs a bright color as well and am thrilled with it.

We can't believe the difference two runners, a little paint, and a couple of mirrors borrowed from the basement made in the space. It is so much brighter and more welcoming!
