growing up
Drew- "Mom, can you drive me to Barnes & Noble?"
Leslie- "No, not today."
Drew- "Please will you? We could go now before we have to pick up Gracie and Luke."
Leslie- "No. It is Katie's rest time. But we wouldn't go today anyway because Nini just took you last weekend."
Drew- "Can we PLEASE go? I really want to spend my gift card."
Leslie- (with more impatience than the situation required) "NO. We are not going to Barnes & Noble today. Maybe we can go this weekend. Don't ask again."
pause
Drew- (in a quiet voice) "Oh. I just wanted to buy a Sofia toy for Katie. When I was there with Nini, I saw a set that she would like and I wanted to use my gift card to get it for her."
(I had simultaneous feelings of pride for my sweet boy and feelings of shame for not practicing what I am always preaching to the kids about showing patience. Mom fail.)
Man do I love that boy! How sweet and generous that he was willing to spend his Christmas gift card on a Sofia toy for his baby sister. (Sofia the First is a cartoon on Disney that Katie is a little bit in love with. She used to be a Dora girl, but she has moved onto Sofia with great intensity. It's pretty cute.) He is growing up so much these days- being more helpful around here, controlling his temper a bit better, and (most days) really trying to obey the first time he is asked- something we've been working on for a while. He requested a chore chart like his older siblings have and he has been all about earning his circles. He takes his jobs very seriously.
He and I have been reading together every afternoon while Katie naps and his reading has just taken off! He went from knowing a dozen sight words last month to being able to read entire books (simple books, of course) this month. He continues to love numbers and enjoys being given basic addition and subtraction fact review sheets in the afternoons while Luke works on his homework. He also enjoys taking notes on Wild Krattz episodes on PBS. The notes are the absolute cutest- he draws a picture of the animal featured in that episode and then writes five things about the animal down below. He is still working on spacing and where to place the words, so the end result is a page completely covered with letters. I want to keep them all, they are just that precious.
Drew is not always the most go-with-the-flow kind of kid and he requires a bit more of my energy than is his share on some days, but I really am just so proud of him and happy with all of the growth he is showing lately. We went to Kindergarten Orientation for him last week and although it made me a little sad to think about him starting elementary school next year, I know he is ready.
* His grouchy mama apologized for losing her patience and thanked him for such a sweet offer.
