rules

I follow the rules. It bothers me when others don't.

It might be the people- pleaser in me. It might be in my personality. It just might be the way I was raised. Whatever the cause, I figure if a rule was made, it was made for a reason and should be followed. Period.

So when I show up at a child's birthday party at a bounce gym and the sign requests no food or drinks, I throw away my drink- even if I just drove through Starbucks to get it. (& when I then walk into the bounce gym and see other parents with drinks, I get annoyed.)

When a sign says no left turns, I don't. No matter how convenient it would be. (& when I see other people doing it, I get aggravated.)

I am even more of a stickler for social "unwritten" rules. I can't stand people who talk in the movie theatre with no regard to the people around them. I cringe at mothers who socialize-loudly- during Preschool Story Time at the library, oblivious to the disruption they cause. I think it is rude when people don't obey the "Express Lane" limit at the grocery store.

I am not on a high horse here (I hope), but just explaining the way I work. I know some other rule-followers who read this blog who will understand exactly what I am talking about.

All of this being said, I find myself looking for ways to break a rule this week.

I am supposed to be accompanying Ben on a cruise to Jamaica in two weeks. We expressed concern a couple of months ago about my ability to board the ship so far along in my pregnancy, but both my doctor and the HR rep for the company in charge of all of the trip logistics said it would not be an issue. A few days ago while looking over some documents we had just received from the cruise ship, I was surprised and disappointed to find the statement, "Celebrity Cruises cannot accept guests who will have entered their 24th week of pregnancy during the cruise."

I will become 24 weeks pregnant two days before we leave.

Part of me wants to accept my fate. It says in black and white that I cannot go.

A bigger part of me thinks the rule is pretty dumb. My doctor says I am fine to travel. If I was one week less pregnant I could go, no problem. (Also, my due date was changed at the beginning of my pregnancy from May 31rst to May 25th- could we just go with the old due date for a couple of weeks?)

So my plans are stuck on hold until Monday when I can get someone from the cruise company on the phone to verify my fate one way or another.

Stupid arbitrary rule.

Leslie, I am of the belief that most teachers are rule followers. I also detest people talking during movies Once, I had a phone call from a mother who was upset that Elizabeth was mad at her daughter because Elizabeth wouldn't talk to her during the movie. The last movie we went to someone answered her phone and then went on to explain why she couldn't talk (twice!!). I say go for the cruise. Break a rule. This one doesn't bother anyone else. Have fun! Thanks, Joanie. I wish it was my rule to break, but they require a doctor's note stating how far along the pregnancy is before they allow a woman to board the cruise. Lying about it isn't even an option. I'm only having a hard time with it because I am so very close to the cut-off. I just can't believe that a few days would make a difference. Ben and I are just holding out hope that with a note from my doctor saying I am healthy and fit to travel, I might get some really nice, really sympathetic higher-up who might OK me to go since it is just a few days past the date. Probably wishful thinking....
