the "somethings" of parenting this week

You know how they say in parenting "it is always something?"

Well, I just want to document here that with four kids, it really, really is always something.

Rare are the days when everyone in the family is happy and healthy and free of drama. It is not often that there is not at least a little bit of worry or uncertainty about something.  There is always something on my mama mind when it comes to those four.

Luke did not feel good yesterday. He was running a low grade temp, had a sore throat and congestion, and moped around all afternoon. He willingly went to bed early. He woke up this morning with a normal temperature once again and said that he felt better. With a little internal debate, I ended up letting him go to school. Tonight holds two of the most anticipated events of the school year for Luke- Spring Fling (a school carnival of sorts) after school and Third Grade Outdoor Movie Night this evening. He knows that if he is too sick for school, he is too sick for these two activities. I will be thinking of him all day, hoping he is not miserable at school.

Drew has been absolutely loving school over the past few months, so much so that it is hard to believe he is the same kid who was tearful about going at the beginning of the year. He counts down the minutes until we get to leave for school each morning. Yesterday after he got hurt at school, he wanted nothing to do with being there. By the time I arrived, the bleeding had stopped and he could have stayed, but he was adamant about coming home with me, even if it meant skipping his attendance at Lunch Bunch with his little buddy. I hoped an afternoon at home would make it all better.

To my surprise, though, this morning when he woke up, he began protesting about school. He wanted to know why he had to go. I haven't heard this question from him in months and months. I explained to him that he only has six days left at Webster Hills and that they are full of fun activities. He didn't care. He thought he would just stay at home with us today. I managed to get him cheerfully out the door and into Hank by reminding him that he gets surprise bag today. We drove so that he would not change his mind on the walk to school.

Once we got to school and got in the car rider drop off line, though, he looked at me with tears in his eyes and said that he didn't feel like going to school. Luckily, the director kindly intervened and by the time I pulled away sixty seconds later, he was holding her hand with a smile on his face. I will be thinking of him all morning, hoping he is having a smooth time of it. I hate the thought of his last days of preschool being filled with any sadness on his part.

Katie has a nasty cough. Luckily not many other symptoms, so I am not too worried about her, but I still hate the sound of it. Pair a strong cough with a strong gag reflex and you have a pretty bad combination. She is much more clingy than normal and much more quick to lose her temper. Hard to know if it is from not feeling good or if it is from not sleeping well because of persistent coughing.

Always something, right?
