Saturday morning, 6:02

Oh, how I wish I could occasionally sleep in.

I am more of a night owl than an early riser and I always have been.

With children who like to wake up before the sun, this poses quite a problem. And, to clarify, it's just a problem for the silly lady who stays up until midnight watching House Hunters and Jimmy Fallon. The kids are perfectly happy with their sleep schedules.

Over the years, the kids have ruined me for sleeping in, even when I have the chance. It is a rare morning that I sleep past seven no matter where I am. When Ben and I have a getaway night, I am usually still up bright and early, lying in the hotel room bed and cursing myself for being awake.

I am typing this morning over coffee and really wishing that last night had contained a few more hours of sleep for me. I stayed up a little later than I should have. Then Katie showed up at the side of my bed sometime around two in the morning. And then Ben had to get up very, very early to go into work and I woke up with his alarm. In what has become sadly typical around here, I got about six hours of sleep with an interruption in the middle.

When Ben's alarm went off at 5:30, I offered him coffee because I felt guilty for still being in a warm bed while he was throwing clothes on to head into work to meet a delivery.  Once he left, I told myself to fall back asleep, quickly computing that I should be able to get about 25 more minutes before a child showed up next to my bed. (No matter how tired I am, I can always instantly do that math.)

Instead of falling back asleep, though, I started thinking about everything that has to get done this morning. Is this true for mothers everywhere? I suspect it might be. The team pictures followed by a double game for Luke beginning at 8:30 this morning. Do we know where his jersey is? Katie's first ballet class is this morning. Is Ben going to be back home in time for us to leave at 8:10, and did I put her leotard in the dryer? Is she going to temporarily suspend the current phase she's in of clinging to my leg and hiding when strangers talk to her?  The check engine light came on in the van. When are we going to get it into the shop?  Patti and Paul are coming for a visit and babysitting tonight. I need to get a few groceries to make life easier for them. Are we out of diet Coke? Drew has a birthday party to attend this afternoon. Did he finish making his birthday card? And so on.

Before I knew it, it was 6:02 and Drew was ready to start our day. It's going to be a good one, I can already tell. I just wish that I had squeezed in a little bit more sleep before beginning it.

I would think the Avett Brothers concert would ease some of this pain, said the insanely jealous brother in law.
