{change of plans}
So Ben and I are supposed to be off this evening having a little night away at the wedding reception of my cousin and her new hubby. My kids are supposed to be having a really fun evening with their Nini and Papa and we are supposed to be off dancing and drinking wine and hanging out and being grown ups. We are supposed to be enjoying a hotel room for the night and then meeting my old college roommate and her husband for brunch tomorrow morning.
Instead, we are back at home in St. Louis unloading the cars from our trip, putting away new presents, unpacking, and doing laundry. The reason for the not as fun change in schedule? Drew was horribly sick last night. He woke me up at midnight last night to tell me he had gotten sick to his stomach. Just as soon as I had that mess cleaned up, he did it again. And then again. And then again. And again. Thirteen rounds in all, my poor little guy. I think I might have gotten about three hours sleep total as I kept watch over him, but they were divided into small increments of time and didn't do me a whole lot of good. Which leads me to wonder- How did I survive when I had a newborn? I am exhausted today.
Although Drew was finally keeping popsicles down by noon today and Patti and Paul very generously encouraged us to stick with our original plans, we opted to skip the reception and head back to Webster Groves instead. The fear was that Drew was just the first in the family to get sick, not the only in the family to get sick. Plus, keeping the kids overnight for us is already such an over-the-top wonderful thing for Patti and Paul to do that we couldn't in clear conscience leave them with the extra burden of sickness on top of the normal chaos that comes from having our four kids as overnight house guests.
I sit here with heavy eyes typing to the sounds of bedtime protests coming from all directions. I have four kids who have gotten used to late bedtimes over the past week! Sorry, kiddos, I understand that you all napped in the car this afternoon and would like to stay up later, but it is 9:45 and this mama is running on fumes. I am actually looking forward to sleep this evening even more than I was looking forward to attending the wedding reception this evening…... but I am still bummed by the change in plans.
