tooth fairy drama
We had quite the excitement at our house tonight.
First, I should preface this by saying that Luke is very into being a detective these days. Since discovering Nate the Great and Encylopedia Brown, he wants to turn everything into a mystery.
So... somehow in the span of about an hour tonight, Gracie misplaced the tooth that she lost at school today. I'm still not sure what happened. She had it out before dinner for some reason and we haven't seen it since.
As I'm sure you can imagine, she was pretty upset when she realized it was gone. (This is her first tooth to fall out and she is so very excited about the tooth fairy.)
We looked all over the kitchen and living room! We crawled around on our hands and knees to see if it had fallen onto the kitchen floor. I even dug through the contents of our kitchen garbage. We searched for over thirty minutes.
No luck.
After just a few tears, Gracie made a surprisingly calm suggestion that she write a letter of apology to the tooth fairy and place that under her pillow instead.
I wish my scanner was working to share the note in her handwriting and spelling, but it says:
Dear Tooth Fairy,
I am very very very sorry. I lost my tooth at school today and I somehow lost it somewhere in my house. I apologize to you.
Love,
Gracie Hedenberg
The entire time Gracie wrote the letter, Luke continued playing detective. He drew pictures of teeth and asked her which picture her tooth looked like. He took his magnifying glass and tried to look under the fridge. He threw out dozens of oddball suggestions with great enthusiasm- "I know! Gracie, maybe you lost your tooth inside the keys on the piano!" He tried to rephrase things like they do in Nate the Great- "We shouldn't be asking where the tooth is. We should be asking what the tooth is!" (It was after this question that Gracie began to lose her patience with her little brother.) I found him very entertaining and had to bite my cheek a couple of times to keep from laughing.
