early morning musings
It's early and Gracie, Luke, and Drew are still asleep. I have the whole quiet house to myself for a couple more minutes and the coffee is brewing- such a nice way to start my day.
There is not really a specific reason for this post; it is probably going to be more of a collection of little things to share. I posted pictures yesterday but had very little time to put any thoughts with them.
***My schedule is looking much different beginning this week. Our next door neighbors had a baby seven weeks ago and have now both returned to work. I will be watching their little Ella for the rest of the school year. She is such a sweetie and Drew is doing remarkably well having her around.
As smoothly as things have begun with Ella though, I realize that adding a newborn to the mix around here is going to take some getting used to! I sat on the couch with a magazine at 7:30 last night and had the realization that it was the first moment to myself I'd had in thirteen hours. Drew and Ella tag-teamed things all day: one was awake and the other was asleep or one was content and the other needed attention. Throw in a high-energy four year old and a husband out of town for work and you have one tired mama!
***Sitting with Gracie at church on Sunday I had another reminder of the fact that she is growing up. There was a boy sitting in front of us- I would guess him to be about eight- who could not keep his eyes off of Gracie. This was different than the usual way that kids check each other out; he actually blushed a couple of times when she caught him watching her. When we were praying, I could feel him completely turned around in his seat to get a better look! Thankfully, I think I still have a little time; she was more interested in watching the choir and completing the word search on her clipboard than in him. I am in NO hurry for all of that to start- I want to keep her little just as long as I can!
***Drew is now walking like it is nothing. He's been so close for a couple of weeks, but yesterday he seemed to just wake up able to walk around. It is completely adorable. The climbing has continued as well. I feel like I go through my day holding my breath and running to pull him down off of something. His vocabulary is really improving as well. His newest word is "yite" for light and he points out every lamp and overhead light he can see. The other morning I walked into his bedroom after nap and he pointed to an area where sunlight was shining on the wall and said "yite."
***Luke is extra talkative these days. I have never before understood it when people have said they wish their child had a mute button. ;)
I don't mean it in a mean spirited way, it just gets mentally exhausting to have nonstop conversation with him for hours on end. There are some hours that I would safely bet he is quiet a grand total of one or two minutes. He doesn't let me tune him out either. A typical running monologue of Luke's:
"Look at this caterpillar. He has many parts. Look mama- look at the many parts. Which part is his stomach do you think? Mama- which part? Nope, not that part. It is this part, I believe. He starts with a "C" so I could take him to school for "C" week, right? Right? Right? I know what I will take for "D" week. A dog. Or Darby. We should do a Tigger and Pooh play. We could do that, couldn't we mama? We need Tigger and Pooh and Darby and Buster. Drew could be Buster because he likes dogs. Who do you want to be mama? Mama? Did you hear what I asked you? Who do you want to be? Nope, you can't be that. You should be Kanga and Drew could be Roo, except you need something to wear like a pouch to hold your baby. I know! You have something like that, did you know that? You know...that things that you wear when you take Drew somewhere and you wear him like he is a baby kangaroo. That would work, wouldn't it mama? You can make that as tight as you need it to be, right mama? I wonder who thought of that invention? I would like to make an invention like that. If I was a scientist I could make inventions. How did they think of the word "invention"? Mama, who thinks of words? ....."
and so on and so on.
Keep in mind that it really doesn't matter what I am doing during all of this. Trying to hold a baby and make lunch....folding laundry....driving....trying to change a messy diaper of a squirmy baby.....helping Gracie with homework.....
My quiet morning is no longer so quiet and my time to type is very over! :)
Happy Tuesday, all!
