an update on Luke
I am home from the hospital for a shower break and wanted to update on Luke. As most of you know, he is a patient in the Riley Hospital Burn Unit because of the injuries to his hand while camping on Sunday.
After visiting the pediatrician on Monday, we were starting to think that the worst was behind us in terms of his recovery, but we received a phone call on Tuesday afternoon from the burn unit at Riley Childrens Hospital asking us to bring him in that evening so they could look at his burn. They had received a phone call from our pediatrician and felt that because there was plastic imbedded in the burn, they needed to see it.
We took Luke in on Tuesday and found out that he would be admitted to the hospital and staying overnight. After much waiting around, we were given a room. He was given an IV full of strong pain medication and then taken back to get his hand examined. They removed all of the plastic still sticking to his hand, drained all of the blisters, and bandaged him up.
This morning he was examined again and given a long bath. His dressing was changed and they put a cast like contraption on his hand, forcing it to stay open so the scar that forms does not cause him to lose flexibility and movement in his hand. We were told that he will remain in the hospital until at least Friday for more obervations. We are hoping that surgery will not be needed. They are unable to tell at this point.
Luke is doing better than I expected. There have been some really crummy moments in the past 24 hours, but he is a trooper. Ben and I have done our best to make his hospital stay as fun as we can. Lots of games, books, cartoons, milkshakes....whatever we can think of.
I will try to update again with any changes. Thank you for the many, many phone calls and emails we've gotten today. They really helped to pass the time and reminded me once again how blessed we are to have so many wonderful people in our lives.
Please say a prayer for Luke tonight.
