{thoughts on expecting a fourth child}

I just spent Drew's nap time trying on maternity clothes. Depressing. (How in the world am I already to the maternity-clothes stage of this pregnancy?? All I can say is that by the fourth time you are pregnant, you must begin to show very early. ) When I was expecting Gracie and Luke, I could not wait to wear maternity clothes.  By Drew, the novelty had worn off.  By now, I can honestly say that the thought of wearing maternity clothes for the next seven months could bring tears to my eyes if I thought about it too long.

I am going to try very hard to keep this blog from turning all- pregnancy, all- of- the- time. Or even into all-pregnancy some-of-the-time. I kind of feel like pregnancy is one of those topics that unless you are also going through it, is just boring to hear about...... like when someone wants to describe the dream they just had or the traffic they've just been in. You want to be interested, but you just aren't.

The thing is, though, pregnancy is a pretty consuming state to be in. When a person goes through what feels like basically a six week really shitty hangover, she finds it hard to not talk about it. When a person begins to outgrow each and every pair of pants in her closet, she wants to cry about it to sympathetic ears. When a person dyes her hair back to her natural color in order to stop coloring it with chemicals every six weeks for the next seven months and she really despises it, she wants to moan about it a little. Misery loves company, I guess.

When a woman is pregnant for the first time- and maybe even the second- she is allowed to do this. I don't think anyone finds it annoying when a first time mom-to-be goes on and on about her pregnancy. She can update her facebook status with pregnancy tidbits to her heart's content. She can post picture of her growing belly.  She can devote entire blogs to preparing for the baby.

But by the time a woman is pregnant for the third time, people are kind of done and over it. By the fourth, well..... I feel like the general public, myself included, is thinking, "You knew what you were getting into by this time around, suck it up and get over it."

The lack of excitement is apparent even when complete strangers ask me about my pregnancy. The nurses at my OB's office, people at the store, anyone who sees me without the kids, really- they all basically have the same reaction to me-

Stranger: (in a cooing, sweet voice) Awww.....is this your first?
Me: No, actually this is my fourth.
Stranger: (in a shocked voice, as if I have just confessed that I don't believe in tooth-brushing) Four????  Wow!

(I am so tired of this reaction that I actually lied to a stranger at the hair salon last weekend and replied yes. I am not proud of this.)

Although we would still fit right in in Zionsville where large families are common, having four children is not the norm in Knoxville or in Decatur. The news certainly seems to surprise people. More often than not, the response to our news from family and friends was not "Congratulations, that is so wonderful for your family!", but, "Oh my gosh, four?!? You are going to be so busy!" or "Was this planned?" You would think that we are just one step behind becoming the Duggars. I have gotten so defensive that I find myself commonly specifying that this is "our fourth and last baby."

I am having a hard time with the tone of this post. It sounds pretty bitter, though I don't mean it to. I just wanted to share my thoughts on something that has been on my mind lately.

And on a completely unrelated note, my belly laugh for the day came from Drew while I was typing this.  About ten minutes ago, completely out of the blue, he stopped playing with his trains to walk over to me and say, "Mama no penis. Lukey penis. Gracie no penis. Daddy penis.  Drew penis." Once I agreed with him, he walked right back over to his train set and began playing once again. I guess he just thought I needed a quick anatomy lesson. Funny boy.

I'm glad you are coming out of that hangover stage! You are right, that is pretty consuming to feel like crap every day!
You know, my thought on the stranger's reactions was that they are surprised you could be on your 4th only because you look so young--not because it's your fourth persay. Stick with that! Honestly!

I don't know if you meant for this post to be funny, but I was dying laughing while I read it. And not just Drew's antics, which could have been a post in and of itself. I love your candid thoughts on pregnancy! And I find it hilarious that you lied to a stranger about it being your first.

I can't speak for everyone, but I enjoy reading about how your pregnancy is going. I wish my sister would write about hers, more than the occassional facebook update. I have pregnant friends who fill out those 20-some questionaires every week and post them to their blog, and I read them all the time. I think pregnancy is fascinating. And I'm sure you'll appreciate (and maybe even laugh) at these little snippet-posts of your life in a few years. That is, if you have time to read old blog posts. You are going to be so busy afterall. :)

I agree with Rachel - you don't look old enough to be having your 4th. Plus you and the kids always look well turned out and not (too) harried - they are just jealous! I can guarantee that's what Grandma Babe would tell you!
We are all VERY excited about the new baby. If you need to vent about anything, just give me a call. My work ethic has flown out the window and I have lots of time for phone calls.

Love,
Patti
I agree with Meaghan, your post was pretty funny, even if you didn't mean for it to be. I can just picture you smiling sweetly and lying to the stupid broad.

As for the penis remark....you've probably figured out that they think that way when they're two and probably when they're 82. It all revolves around the penis...I didn't mean for that to sound so dirty!

That's it. You are cut off from all my future dream stories. You'll be missing out too. I've had some doozies lately.

Leslie,
I have to admit I smiled while reading your blog only because it was so honest and true! I for one am very happy about the new baby! But I LOVE babies!!! Who cares what all those morons think anyway!

Even though I don't get to see you all very often I feel like I am "in the loop" from your blog

You just continue to enjoy every minute of your pregnancy and your babies and to HECK with the
idiots that don't realize what a blessing they all are.

And Barb was right Babe would tell you they are all just jealous!

I think lying to that person is just fine. I get really tired of the comments of "your busy" and "how cute" while stopping me in the middle of my task, when all I really wanted to do was spend an extra 2 minutes in the makeup aile. Now I have two crying babies and a 4 year old that wants to know why he can't go to Addi's when we're trying to check out at Target. Some people don't get that they should just leave a perfect stranger alone and keep their comments to themselves. It's not always easy being out-numbered by your children, ok- it's rarely easy, but being able to see a smile after some tears, hear how excited you child is about anything and snuggling a baby makes it all worth it. Bring on Baby #4, and anymore you have in your heart!!!

Leslie,
I think that most people are just jealous because you are so patient and you look so well put together and young that "it must be your first or second"
For some reason if you have a pregnant belly people need to make a comment whether it is a compliment or a inquiry on what size you should be at any given time. I think that it is OK if you want to become the Duggar family, but you would definitely HAVE to move closer to home for some more help. Try not to let it get you down, you will get through this and make it look easy like you do with everything else. We are all VERY happy about the new baby! I wonder if the baby will have a penis or no penis??? I bet you wonder too! =)

Leslie -

I can so identify with you. I still remember the comments we got when I was pregnant with Shaughn. (And yes, I DID know what caused "it" by then...!)

It seems like most people think you should stop having children after you have a boy and a girl (or as Drew sees it, a child with a penis and a child with no penis). :)
