my big girl

We had a fifth grade choir concert this evening at the elementary school. Luke was on stage, Katie was on my lap (back row for us because we did not arrive seven hours early like everyone else in Webster Groves!), and Drew was next to me. Grace spotted some friends and wanted to watch the concert with them.

As the concert ended, I turned to the back of the gym and had a moment that made my heart stop for just one second. For a split second, I didn't recognize my daughter in the group of ten or so people squeezing in together for a selfie on someone's phone. I saw only a bunch of teenagers. It lasted just a fraction of a moment, but it was enough to make me realize how big she is getting. Her hair in a bun on top of her head, favorite tee shirt tucked into her favorite teal skirt, combat boots on, purse slung across her body..... she looked so big.

It didn't help that not one, not two, but three different friends commented on how grown up she is looking lately. My friend Halli said she saw her the other day and almost didn't recognize her. My friend Caroline commented on how pretty she is getting, but said with the sadness of a fellow mom that there is almost no trace of little girl in her face anymore.

It would be easy to be sad about this, but really, I am just so darn proud of the her and the kind of young adult she is turning into. She makes me so proud to be her mom.
