October weekending
Perfect fall weather here this weekend made me so happy. We had three textbook October days here with bright blue skies, temperatures in the upper sixties, and not a drop of rain in sight. I am realizing more and more lately that my mood is a little bit affected by the weather. Stretches of gray and rainy days just start to make me feel blah, while perfect, sunny days really perk me up. I have decided I could never live in Seattle!
On Friday night, Luke enjoyed a sleepover at his friend's house. We don't do many sleepovers in general, but the family that asked is a wonderful family and I knew he would be in great hands. He had a blast. While he was off having his fun, the rest of us went out for pizza and then came home to a much needed, wow-this-was-a-long-week kind of bedtime for all. Pretty sure everyone in the house was asleep by 9:30.
Saturday morning was probably the highlight of the weekend for me. Grace and I went to watch Luke's choir sing the national anthem at the beginning of a charity run in our community. After the anthem, the choir kids were invited to run in the race if they chose. Luke absolutely loved his first race experience. He had just crossed the finish line when he turned to me to ask if he could sign up for another one. Gracie also wanted to know if she could run next time. As a non-runner myself, I sure am happy to see them enjoying something that I wish I enjoyed.
The best part of the morning was just being out and part of our great Webster Groves community. Some of the people around here jokingly call Webster Groves "Mayberry" because sometimes it just seems a little too good to be true. Saturday morning I got a glimpse of this. It really did look like a movie scene for a perfect and wholesome little community. There were friendly people everywhere, everyone proudly wearing their orange and black. The firetruck was parked in front of the high school displaying an American flag. Everyone seemed to know everyone else and all of the runners who finished the race got cheers. Gracie and I knew so many people there and it was a wonderful feeling. The woman handing out medals to the runners is a good friend of ours. The assistant superintendent of the district literally gave Luke the running numbers off of his shirt once Luke decided he wanted to run. The mother who sold us a Webster Groves sweatshirt is a fellow kindergarten mom I just met two weeks ago. There were dozens of classmates and their families all around the scene and we couldn't walk ten feet without seeing someone we knew and liked.
It was a nice scene and one that made me thankful that we moved here.
Saturday afternoon brought a soccer game for Drew, his last of the season. He played goalie for the first time and, all bias aside, did a REALLY good job. We were so proud of him. He is a really athletic little guy…… when he decides he wants to be. (We had one soccer game a few weeks ago where he absolutely refused to play in his game. Who knows why. I tried to drag him onto the field, but he just kept running off. It was probably quite comical to anyone not involved with his stubbornness.)
Our late afternoon and evening on Saturday was our block party. It was a fun time hanging out with neighbors we know and like and getting to know some new friends. The kids had so. much. fun. I don't think the boys stopped running around once in five hours. From the bike parade at the start of the party to finally crashing into bed around 9:30, they just played and played and played. Gracie set up a face painting table and provided face and hand painting to all of the little kids. She loved it. After it got dark, a friend of mine introduced her to some other eleven/twelve year olds in the neighborhood who go to the private Catholic school in the neighborhood. Grace loved meeting them and ended off leaving with them to go play soccer and jump on the trampoline in a neighborhood yard. It was cute to see her excitement when she got home two hours later- she really was grinning ear to ear. She is so social and loves to make new friends; she is so her dad's little girl sometimes!
Sunday was more of a let's- get- stuff- done day. Ben is working hard on our bathroom renovation. I am prepping for a craft fair I am selling in at the beginning of November. Grace leaves for camp first thing tomorrow morning and we got her duffel packed. The girls and I ran to the fabric store to buy fabric for Halloween costumes. There were groceries to buy and laundry (laundry… there always seems to be so much laundry….. sigh…..) to work on. Gracie had some extra homework to complete after missing two days of school last week.
In the middle of a lot of productivity, we did squeeze a little fun in our day. I met my book club at the movie theatre to see Gone Girl. Ben took the kids to the Halloween store to buy a couple of needed costume accessories. (Do you know how much Ben loves to go to the Halloween store? Not kidding when I say that he gets more excited than the kids about costumes each year.) Ben made a big pot of our favorite tortellini soup. I walked through the Gap after the movie and bought a couple of new things for fall. Shopping by myself…. something that never, ever happens! It felt so indulgent and wonderful! :)
Hope your weekend was just as good to you as ours was!
