{Being a homeowner is a lot of work.}
It feels like it is always something in this house. Just as soon as we fix one thing, or sometimes while we are still in the middle of fixing one thing, something else in the house wants our attention.
I know this is true for many of you as well and that we are no different than many other homeowners, but lately it feels more overwhelming than we are used to. Occasionally we shake our heads at each other and wonder just why we wanted an old house. I dream of what it would be like for us if we had chosen a newer home that didn't need so much love. All of this headache sometimes feels a high price to pay for a little charm and a great neighborhood.
This was the view of our kitchen yesterday as I tried to salvage some favorite teaching papers that got wet in the basement. The unwanted excitement of spending a portion of my day mopping up water, rewashing hanging clothes that were in storage down there, and going through a couple of boxes of stored teaching materials to see what could be saved was not what I had in mind for our Monday afternoon.

In truth, I have to blame my boys more than I blame the house for this particular mishap. After their bath, they forgot to drain the tub. Because there is a slow and steady drip from the old spout in the tub, they have been warned many times to always drain the tub when they are done. The timing of their mistake yesterday was unfortunate because it happened at a time when Katie was napping and everyone else was upstairs, so this bathroom- the only one on the main level of the house and the one that usually sees many visitors each hour- was empty for about two hours. I walked into the kitchen at the end of the afternoon and suddenly heard water raining in the basement. I ran down to a huge mess and then ran upstairs to the bathroom to see a tub completely overflowing and about an inch of water on the bathroom floor. boo. Everything is pretty much cleaned up and drying out now, but what a hassle!
Last month was a leaking basement in heavy rain. We are still trying to get everything dry down there. This past weekend was rotted wood on the carport and window frames on the back of the house. Yesterday was more water excitement. This whole week is two of the three AC systems in the house not working.
It is always something.
