{these kids}

These kids of mine. They sure keep life interesting.

Multiple times a day I am surprised or amused by something that comes out of someone's mouth.

Like today- Drew spontaneously teared up. When I asked him what was wrong, he told me he doesn't want to get old. A few more questions and answers followed until he shared his main reason.... old people get chicken pox all of the time and he just really doesn't want to have chicken pox. Where in the world does he come up with this stuff?

I also am getting such a kick out of his spelling lately. Sometimes he spells out a request and I usually give in because I am just so impressed. He spelled out (not correctly, but hitting most of the sounds) "Can I play video games please?" this afternoon. Guess who got to play video games this afternoon?

Or Katie's running commentary on life these days as her vocabulary is exploding. Drew had the back door open today to water a potted plant on the porch. I asked Katie to shut the door and she responded very casually, "No mama.  I watchin' Drew." Last Friday she said, "Help please mama. I poopy diaper."

She is all about telling us, with great enthusiasm, when she likes something. "I like Dora!" "I like books!" "I like milk!" "I like sliding!" She squeals it with such adorable excitement; I just smile each and every time. I probably sound like a broken record, but it is really cool to watch every step of the process of a human being learning to speak. I am a little sad this is my last time getting to witness it.

Or Luke, who sheepishly came up to me to confess and apologize moments ago because I told him he could read four more pages of his book before lights needed to be out,  but he disobeyed and read an extra three paragraphs. (gasp!) My sweet, rule-following Lukey.

And Gracie-  she and a friend are writing a story together and she came home from school today eager to read me some of the most recent pages. Yes, I admit to being biased, but it is surprisingly good writing for two fourth grade girls. Love her and love that she loves to write.

I also love her love of music. My brother brought the kids a gift:

and she is in love! I had to pull her off of it for bedtime last night, to leave for school this morning, and to leave for her softball game this afternoon.  I see many, many hours of fun for her over the summer on this piano.

I love being the mom to these four.
