I am having an abnormally hard time composing a post over the past couple of days. Each time I sit to write about our week, I just stare at the screen.
I think the reason must be that I am just tired. So tired. Ben has been gone all week, I haven't felt very good, the kids have had at least one something scheduled each night, and Drew is being extra "two" this week. Two Open Houses at the elementary school, soccer, homework, housework, the never ending PTA emails always needing a response, morning car duty, the Fall Party for Gracie's class to finish organizing by next Wednesday, the kids' bedtime routine usually shared with Ben that had to be completed solo for the past four nights......... all have really added up this week to wear me out.
Such is life, I know. I promise that I am not looking for any sympathy here. I just wanted to record the reality of life this week in my world. Thankfully, this is not what my life usually looks or feels like.
Tonight, though, my sweet Gracie made my day. Upon returning from 2nd grade Open House, we had baths to take, backpacks and lunches to pack for school tomorrow, dinner to still be cleaned up, and books to read. Drew was having one meltdown after another and Luke was also very clearly tired and needing to be put to bed. I wasn't feeling very good and just wanted to rest on the couch for a couple of minutes before attempting to complete everything that needed to be done at that moment. I sat down and shut my eyes for just a moment and Gracie came up and asked me what was wrong. I told her I was just tired and that I would be fine in a minute or two.
The next thing I knew, Gracie had taken Drew into the bathroom and brushed his teeth. I heard her say to Luke, "Come brush your teeth and I'll check them tonight instead of Mom." She then took both the boys into their room and I heard her start to read to them. I went in and told her how very proud I was of her and she said she wanted to help because she felt bad that Ben had been gone all week and she knew I had been working hard.
I don't think I could put into words the love I felt at that moment. Such a sweet person, my Gracie girl.
I am off to bed now to gear up for my early morning date with Drew to tour the fire station. I have been looking forward to this all week! After I told him about it at dinner, he kept saying "Drew see firetruck....I am! I am!" and making Gracie and Luke giggle. He gets so excited if he sees a firetruck on the road; I can't imagine how he will react seeing one up close. Pictures will most definitely be shared after this event! :)

I'm not sure that many 7 year olds would recognize that Mom was tired and needed help - and then actually help out. She's a sweet and thoughtful girl - you've done a good job! Give her a hug for me.
Looking forward to pictures of Drew and firetrucks - it ought to be quite an experience!
Hang in there!
