I have a very basic machine purchased for around $100 and I am really happy with it. I actually had a nicer one at one point that had belonged to Paul's mother, but it was too difficult for me at the time.
Most of my sewing has been trial and lots and lots of error. I was awful in the beginning, and now I am average. There are so many things I am excited to learn how to do!
Patti got me some really cool books for Christmas with project ideas and patterns. Have you tried a beginner's book? The sewing section at Borders is huge and really inspirational- you might try browsing through it for a book that seems your style.
Definitely jump in and give it a try! It has been such a fun new hobby for me and I am so glad I've pursued it! If only we lived closer...I'd be more than happy to show you the basics!
