{distraction}
There are some volunteer opportunities where the person volunteering gets so much out of the experience that it doesn't seem right to call it "volunteering."
I had an awful night of sleep worrying about dropping Drew off this morning at his Mother's Day Out Program. Once I finally fell asleep, I had a nightmare that when I got to the school to pick him up, the teachers told me he had been crying and pleading for his mama for the whole three hours.
This morning I was signed up to be a greeter/ car door opener at the elementary school. At a school as massive as ours, they assign eight parents each morning to keep traffic moving and to stand in the circular driveway and help the kids get out of their cars and into the building.
This was my first time doing it and I had absolutely no idea how happy it would make me feel. So many cute children in backpacks! So many "I love you" and "Have a great day, sweetie" statements being shouted! So many shy smiles! So many random comments! (One little guy replied to my "Good morning!" with "I just ate blueberry waffles! Yum!")
Fifty minutes of standing in the early morning sun with my coffee in one hand and Drew in the stroller next to me pointing out each and every truck he saw.....and there are ALOT of trucks in Tennessee!..... It was a nice way to spend a morning and a great distraction for me.
We leave in thirty minutes for the MDO Program and my stomach is back in knots. Drew has been in a very clingy mood for the past month or so, so there is no doubt in my mind that he will cry when I leave him. The question is not if he will be upset, but how quickly will they be able to distract him and calm him down?
Poor little guy.
