{a conversation with Luke at kindergarten pick-up}

So it seems as if there is a little jerk in Luke's class. We'll call him Bob.

Luke has an assigned seat next to Bob. Yesterday Bob told Luke that if he didn't be quiet, he was going to squeeze him and hurt him. Luke told Ben about it first thing this morning. (Ben didn't get home from work last night until after Luke was asleep.)  Ben told Luke to stick up for himself and do whatever he needed to do to keep Bob from bullying him. Luke understands this, but also fears getting in trouble with his teacher.

Fast forward to pick up today.  Luke tells me all of the good things about his day.  He was the Star Student.  It was Hero Day and there were policemen visiting the cafeteria at lunchtime.  His teacher held Class Store and he bought a plastic lizard for five of his good behavior pennies. He loved the book they read.

Then I asked him if Bob was any nicer today.  He said no. He said, and I'll try to type it as accurately as I can:

"Bob called me two names.  One was chubby. The other was......I don't really quite know what he said.......whitey tight?...whitey tighters?....something and then something about underwear.......and then he said he was going to push me....and I said 'Oh no you are NOT!' and I said to him, 'Bob, you do NOT want a piece of me!!"

At this moment I was equal parts angry that some little jerk is being mean to my kid, proud that Luke is standing up for himself, and amused by Luke's response.

Never a dull moment. :)

way to go Luke! I of course do not advocate fighting but it is always good to stand up for yourself. That's why it is good for boys to have fathers or at least manley influences in their life because conflict is handled very differently in girl world.

I LOVE that kid!! I think that's the way to stop the bullying before it even starts - to firmly stand up for yourself. I had one girl who made my life miserable and I finally stood up to her and then completely turned my back on her. She came crawling back later - but I never really trusted her. Bullies back down pretty quickly when you take a stand. Tell Luke "Good Job".
