transition

There are so many things going on and so many decisions to make that I have to keep reminding myself to focus on what needs to be done right now. Today. I have a feeling that two months from now life will have settled into a new normal, but gosh.....everything right now feels so up in the air. For someone who doesn't really enjoy change very much, there is sure a lot of it coming my way.

On top of all of the decisions and tasks on our never-ending to do list, it's starting to hit me that we are closing this chapter in our family's life. It's kind of sad. We've only been here for three years, but we've made some great friends. The kids have blossomed while we have lived here- Gracie has grown up so much and started school, Luke has changed from a two year old toddler to a bright, happy five year old boy, and Drew....well, gosh, I get sentimental thinking that when we moved here we were only a family of four. Indiana has been wonderful if for no other reason than it brought us Drew!

But as sad as I am about leaving Zionsville, part of me is ready to just get on with it. Ben definitely feels the same way. His mind is already on his new position and he will be there physically after this week. As for me, I feel as if we're in limbo. There are things coming up with friends and at Gracie's school that we'll be gone for, so we can't plan on participating. This is my last week watching little Ella and Luke's last week at his preschool. Our house doesn't feel as much ours as it does the new buyer's. It's a strange transition to feel as if we're not at all in our new place yet, but really not all the way here either.

If the next three weeks of my life is one goodbye after another, I'd rather skip it. Rip off the Band Aid quickly and move on. Not because I don't love our home here, our friends here, our neighbors, our schools, the community, etc, but because I do. It pretty much sucks to think about saying one goodbye after another.

I got a sweet email from Luke's teacher about it being his last week and it brought tears to my eyes. Gracie tearfully told me that she would miss her friends when we moved and I had such a lump in my throat trying to comfort her. I fear it will be hard to keep all of my emotions in check in front of the kids, and I really want to seem completely upbeat about the move in the hopes that they will be too.

I've been trying to make the move as exciting as possible for the kids. They have heard all about the big new backyard and basement play room and they are really excited to see them. They will be sharing a bedroom and they are thrilled about it. (Seriously, they are. I wasn't sure how it would go, but they can't wait! Big relief.) We told them about the new Y near our house and got them looking forward to gymnastics and swim lessons. We have told them that we will get to go hiking in the Smokies as soon as the weather is nicer. We've checked out many books on TN from the library in order to plan some fun weekend outings. We're going to plan our first visit from the grandparents and get that on the calendar so they can have that to look forward to. I'm doing anything I can think of to make this feel good for them.

With so many new, exciting things on our horizon, I just need to focus on these positives and try not to get too bogged down with the worry and stress of the move. Easier said than done......

Leslie,
Change is never easy and I hate goodbyes too. You are right your kids will be looking at you and Ben to gage whether this is a good thing or not.

And it will all come together. You all will love TN and that new home. There is going to be so much to do there for the kids. They will follow your lead and soon it will be home to all of you.

Hang in there!
Sally

Leslie, as one 1st born who hates change but keeps changing anyway to another, don't be so hard on yourself. You're a wonderful mother, but I doubt your kids expect perfection. Letting them know that you're really excited but a little part of you is nervous/sad/scared too can't be a bad thing. You and Ben will make it a big adventure that you all experience together. Don't dump an extra bucket of stress on your head trying to be superhuman. Sandi

p.s. I hope we'll be on your list of adventures.
Just remember, if Mama is ok then everyone is ok. Sometimes Mama has to pretend she is ok but that's ok too. You're doing a good job, just keep moving forward. :-)

How is it that your blog post can make me tear up so easily?!? I can't blame it on pregnancy hormones anymore! I'm sure you are doing a wonderful job transitioning the kids. It will be sad for everyone, but you have many adventures and many friends to make in TN, you just don't know them yet!! Hang in there. We are so excited to see you guys!!

I totally understand. It's crazy that ultimately such a happy thing can also be so mentally and emotionally draining. Hang in there! You should be a pro at this by now!

Great words of wisdom from those who have grown with every move they've made. I agree that the kids are going to look to you to show them how to deal with all of this and you're doing a good job making it sound like an adventure. And you know that we're all here to help you any way we can. Even if it's just to say "Good job". We love you.

Thank you so much, everyone, for the advice and nice comments! We'll get through this, I know. Everytime I get too stressed, I just make myself stop thinking about it for a bit- tickling Drew is a great mental distraction! :)
