a much anticipated afternoon

Ben and I told the kids they could each choose one extra curricular activity to enjoy this fall. Gracie has chosen to take gymnastics class and Luke has chosen to take violin lessons.

We have absolutely no idea where he came up with the idea. We tried to gently sway him towards a more age-appropriate activity like swimming, soccer, or gymnastics, but he was completely set on the violin.

After a bit of research, we found a store that rents violins and another company offering in-home lessons. We picked up his violin last week and after days of waiting and patience on Luke's part, today was his much anticipated first violin lesson.

Miss Katie arrived at the house at 1:00 and their first session together was designed to get Luke familiar with the names of the different parts of the instrument and bow. I was a bit apprehensive about his ability to sit and concentrate for 35 minutes, but he did wonderfully.

The cutest part of the lesson was when Katie got out her viola and let Luke pick a song to hear. He chose "Twinkle Twinkle" and she asked him to sing along. He sang with such enthusiasm that I thought for a second that he was joking, but he was really just excited. :)
I was also really amused when she asked Luke to name his violin. He very politely refused. She tried to talk him into it, but he just kept saying, "No thank you. This violin just doesn't have a name." or " I just don't know this violin's name." She finally said, "Well, maybe you can think of a name this week and tell me next time we meet." We'll see if we can come up with a name that he is happy with before next Tuesday!

Love it! You would think that Luke of all people would have a name for his violin...maybe next week. Perhaps he and Will might perform a duet soon? A violin/baritone duet would be pretty interesting.

I'm not surprised he didn't want to name it - he's a rule kind of guy and naming your violin violates so many rules!! I'm so happy that his first lesson went so well. My friend who has played the vioilin for 50 years says that Luke is at the perfect age to start.

We can have a little combo - Drew is quite the piano virtuoso and I think there's a new ukelele that Grace can play. Beautiful music!!

Leslie, Elizabeth has had numerous violins and they have all had names. Lily is her violin that we purchased from Martha Chiligiris. She has been playing almost 14 years. She is playing in the Millikin/Decatur Symphony and they are paying her to play with the Youth symphony. She received a scholarship for violin. Tell Luke we learned all violins have names and to keep playing. Joanie
