Halloween 2008

I love Halloween!

We packed our day with celebration beginning with a Halloween party at the library in the morning. The highlight of the party was listening to Miss Kelly, our favorite librarian, reading one of Luke's favorite Halloween books, The Little Old Lady Who Wasn't Afraid of Anything. Luke was pretty much reciting it along with her. The party was really impressive. The children were able to make Halloween crafts, decorate a ghost cookie, sing songs, and parade around the library in their costumes.

Gracie and Luke had more Halloween fun at school in the afternoon. Luke's class enjoyed the beautiful weather and played outside for a large portion of the afternoon. Gracie's class had a really great class party (Luke's had been on Wednesday for some reason). As soon as I picked them up, they were full of stories and ready to trick or treat, so it was a long two hours to wait until it was time!

Patti and Bridget drove over for the night and arrived in time to help put on costumes and walk with us over to the neighborhood clubhouse. It's such a nice scene there- all of the kids were dressed in costume and the parents were able to visit while the children played and ate their dinners (the neighborhood association grilled out hot dogs and served chips and soda). Ben somehow became a judge of the costume contest which I could tell he really enjoyed.

Once it was dark, we walked back home to pass out candy to trick or treaters for a bit then went out for ourselves. We made it to about twenty houses in all- more than enough for a three and five year old. Gracie was excited about every house, but Luke just kept asking, "Is this Hollis's house?" at each and every house we went to. (Hollis is his little buddy that lives nearby. It was so dark that he had no idea if we were close or not!) He was having a hard time keeping his wizard hat on while carrying his candy bag and after one trip on the sidewalk, we kind of took turns holding his hand and helping him along. Eventually he ended up on Ben's shoulders.

Once trick or treating was over, we carved pumpkins at our house and sampled some of the goodies in the trick or treat buckets. The kids were up a couple of hours past their bedtimes because we were just having such a nice night, so we've had a relatively quiet day at home today recovering.
