Blame it on the gray, windy weather, but there are A LOT of books being read in the Hedenberg household this week! I just finished rereading Snow Flower, Paper Fan by Lisa See- one of the most interesting fiction books I've ever read. The story tells of the lives of two Chinese women in the early nineteenth century. Between their foot binding, their arranged marriages, their role in the family, and their limited exposure to the outside world, reading about these women is both depressing and fascinating. I have a stack of library books I've been racing through as well.

The kids also have a huge stack of library books they've been enjoying. They will sit and be read to for as long as we are willing. I finally asked Luke to find something else to do after our tenth book this morning.

It's been neat to watch them develop an interest in independent reading as well. Gracie loves to sit and read to herself, to Luke, to me, or to her baby dolls. Every night at bedtime she begs for a few more minutes to read in bed- and I can never tell her no. (Just to clarify- she "reads" from memory or by using picture cues; she is not yet actually able to decode unknown words, but it won't be long).

Favorites right now for Gracie are:
  • fairly tales of all sorts
  • Bible stories
  • books about popular characters: Angelina Ballerina, Strawberry Shortcake, My Little Pony, Barbie (Unfortunately, these tend to be poorly written, so they aren't as much fun to read as some of the others.)
  • the American Girls series
  • Laura Ingalls Wilder books

Favorites for Luke:

  • books that rhyme
  • Franklin books
  • Eric Carle books
  • any book about animals

His all-time favorites are I Know A Rhino, Bear Snores On, and The Very Busy Spider.
