real life
Some days I think I've got it all covered.... the four kids in three different schools, the two dogs (seriously- what were we thinking getting a puppy?!?), the small business, the preschool class, the husband away more than he is home, the extracurricular activities, the playdate and birthday party and slumber party requests, the appointments, the never-ending emails to return, the grocery shopping, the mountain of laundry, the sweeping and mopping and washing and wiping down and vacuuming and tidying.... all the stuff that makes up raising four human beings and keeping this house running at least semi-smoothly.
I am not looking for a pat on the back, but simply stating that some days I feel like I'm getting it done and for that alone I can collapse onto my pillow at the end of the day and feel like I've accomplished something.
Other days I just feel like I mess it up. I am impatient with life and expect more from others than I should because I am tired because I stay up too late trying to get things done. We have hard-boiled Easter eggs and trail mix for dinner because I forget to put the planned dinner in the crock pot before leaving for work and we are loooowww on groceries. I skip a meeting (and feel guilty about it) because I have to finish a large order that I knew, even as I was agreeing to it, that I didn't have time to get done that week. I run late to school pick up because even though keys should not be eventually located inside of weird places, sometimes they are. I take Grace to an orthodontist appointment in what I slept in because I forget she has an appointment until I am in the middle of what I think is a quick school drop off on my one morning off of the week. I pack Kate a lunch of a banana and a yogurt because they are the fastest items I can pack and it is 8:02 and her carpool is already waiting in the driveway. I rewash the same load of laundry three times because it keeps sitting so long that it gets sour.
It's not hard to think of the times I mess it up. Everything above is just what immediately came to mind, and they are all things that happened this week. But I am working on showing myself some grace. I am tired of trying to live up to a ridiculous self-imposed standard of super-mothering. While I will never be one of those moms who seem to find it cute to declare herself a mess (you know the type if your Facebook feed looks anything like mine), I am keeping it real when I say that some days even though I am doing my best, I fall into bed at the end of the day and wish I had done better.
