39

Last Friday was my thirty ninth birthday. If the day is any indication of what this year of life will be like, I think I am in store for a great year.

The day began with sweetness from the kids. They had worked together to create a book for me of 39 reasons they love me. They also decorated a huge banner and hung it in the kitchen. Luke drew a pretty awesome picture of Ben and me that is frame worthy.

After a morning at the park with preschool friends, Ben surprised my by taking the afternoon off. We went for lunch at one of my favorite restaurants and then spent a couple of hours antiquing, looking for corbels for the new kitchen island we are building. We spent some time on Cherokee Street and stopped in for one of the best cups of coffee I've ever had at a local coffee house there.

The evening was spent hanging out at home. Ben offered to take all of us out to dinner, and Gracie offered to babysit while Ben and I went out, but I was in a home mood. We worked on the kitchen for a couple of hours and then, out of nowhere, Ben surprised me again with a new wedding band.  The backstory is that I've been unable to wear my wedding/engagement rings for almost a year now because I was having a skin reaction.  My skin would get so irritated that it would crack and bleed where the ring was. I went to the dermatologist to see what could be done, but was told that unfortunately there really wasn't anything that could be done. Since, I've been wearing it for only special occasions and have missed wearing it on a daily basis. (It is surprising to me how often people look at your finger to see if you are wearing a wedding ring. I had no idea.) As a solution, Ben picked out the most delicate and beautiful ring- and one thin enough that it shouldn't irritate my skin. I am happy to say that I've had it on since Friday night without any issue.  It was the best present I could have asked for.

He also surprised me with an ice cream cake- a long standing tradition for my birthday. We all thoroughly enjoyed the treat and then the kids went to bed while Ben and I relaxed on the couch.

It was a lovely, lovely day from start to finish and a perfect way to celebrate a new year of life. Lucky me, though, got to continue the celebrations the next day in Decatur! My mom and dad made a delicious dinner and we got to sit around playing cards and visiting for a few hours. After, the kids hung with grandparents while Ben and I got to go out with some of our friends for a couple of drinks.

I am so thankful for people in my life who love me so well.
