an assorted collection of tidbits about life in our house this month

1. I am so ready for fall. Fall weather. Fall decorations. Fall food. Fall clothing. Fall activities. I keep wondering how much longer it will be before it feels like it has arrived.

2. Luke continues to be all about origami. There are paper Star Wars characters all over our house. Evidently this is quite a popular trend right now with the third grade age group. He has a friend coming over Sunday afternoon to talk origami. I am a little surprised by this new hobby, but find it terribly creative and calming, so I am good with it.

3. This week ends with a celebratory birthday weekend for the new five year old in the house. There are fifteen children coming to help us celebrate on Saturday afternoon. "Why fifteen?" a sane person might ask. Because of the weird timing of his birthday right at the beginning of the school year, we invited the boys from last year's class as well as the boys from this year's class. We assumed that some would not be able to make it. We were wrong. No complaints, though; this is Drew's first "friend" party and we are excited for him.

4.  Drew has decided that he loves school and that morning drop off is no big deal. What a difference a little time makes.

5. Current obsessions of Katie at 2.3 years old: band aids (She always has at least one on, usually for decorative purposes only) and Strawberry Shortcake (pronounced as "Sobbee O'cake"). She also really likes the word "mine!" right now.

6. The backyard spruce up continues.... Ben has been working on building a wooden privacy screen of sorts between our patio and the house behind ours. We love our neighborhood so very much, but don't love how close the houses are to one another.

7. You know you've been up too long when your daughter is taking a nap at 9:25 in the morning. On the plus side, with everyone else off at school, I think I am going to have a quiet house to myself this morning.

8. Gracie had her ten year old physical this week (late because of the move last year). She continues to be about the 40th percentile in height and weight and our pediatrician predicts she will be about five five as an adult.

9. I have been struggling with our busy evenings since the school year began. There are about five waking hours between when G & L get home and when they go to bed. It sounds like plenty of time, but between about an hour of homework, a TV show (reward for completed homework), dinner, baths, piano practice, lunch packing, required independent reading, and minimal chores..... the night just flies by. I pray this gets easier as we settle into a routine or as Ben gets a little less busy at work and is consequently around more in the evenings.  Sometimes I feel like I spend the whole evening just trying to move us from one task to another so we can fit it all in.  This is NOT the way I want to parent.

10. For the second time in about three months, we have to have a windshield replaced- a load of lumber vs. the front window of the van. :(  Talk about a really not fun way to spend $300! Drew and I were talking about it and he said, "Man! That is like the price of all the Imaginext dinosaurs there are! Or three Nintendo DS's!" Yes, my thoughts exactly.

11. My dad is staying with us this week while in St. Louis for business.  At dinner last night, Katie was refusing to try a green bean that he offered to her.  She said, "No, I don't like it." My dad asked her how she knew she didn't like it if she hadn't tried it.  Katie replied in exasperation, " My mom told me I don't like it." (I obviously had said no such thing.) We were all giggling about it.  The things that come out of her mouth these days!

12. I am really ready for new seasons of TV shows to begin. Ben and I love to chill on the couch at the end of the day once the kids are down and there has just been nothing to watch lately. I am most excited about Parenthood, Homeland, Modern Family, and, eventually, Downton Abbey.

2 thoughts, I also can't wait for fall, Parenthood or Modern Family, AND, did you check with your insurance to see if they will subsidize the windshield? We just had ours replaced and only had to pay $100copay for it and State Farm covered the rest. Just a thought! :)

Leslie, Connor would absolutely LOVE origami too, especially star wars! Can you possibly send me and email and let me know the names of some of his favorite origami books? I'm thinking that would be perfect for Connor's upcoming birthday. Can you believe they're going to be 9??? Where does the time go? Thanks!

Rachel, we have been burned in the past on insurance claims, so we are choosing to just pay out of pocket. We had two odd ball situations happen to our home in Knoxville within a year and we are STILL paying higher insurance bills because of it. Being a grown up is fun.

Kate, check on Amazon under "Origami Yoda" and you will find a few books. They are really popular, so I don't think you'll have any problem locating them. Luke loves them. And nine? I know! :)
