{enjoying spring weather}

We are so happy to be enjoying spring weather in St. Louis. We have been outside for most of our waking hours since Friday afternoon. The temperature today and yesterday was in the high seventies and it was pleasant and sunny. The kids have been playing in the sand table, reading outside, climbing our neighbor's tree over and over and over again, riding bikes, and helping Ben and me with some outdoor projects.

We both had some projects we've been wanting to tackle and this weekend with little on the calendar and great weather was just the time to begin. On Saturday Ben tightened all of the wooden patio furniture for me and I began the tedious but very needed job of giving them a little spruce up with paint.   We also spent some of the afternoon cleaning the carport and outside storage area.

Today's project for Ben was fixing a noise the van has been making (he did- hooray!) and washing and vacuuming the vehicles. My project was getting the flower beds around the house ready for plants. The ones out front, especially, are so overgrown that I filled eight lawn bags with dead brush, leaves, gumballs, and debris.

The more exciting of my Sunday projects, though, is this-

On Sunday morning the small patch of yard next to the side backdoor looked like this-

By the time I went in for dinner, it looked like this-

My little helpers alternated between very enthusiastically helping me scoop and haul dirt away from the bed to completely losing interest and running off to do something else.  The littlest Hedenbergs loved all of the worms exposed as I dug and were so thrilled to rescue them from the dirt where I was shoveling and place them in the large flower pot where they would be safe.

It was amusing because at some points in the day I had more help than I could use when all four kids wanted to be right there helping and being a part of things. At other times, everyone was off doing something else and it was just me working alone- which was pretty okay with me too.

It was great to be outside in the fresh air and to get to visit with some of the neighbors who were also out enjoying the weather. At least five different neighbors out walking dogs or working in their yards waved hello or came over to chat. My favorite neighbor, Berta, came over for a long visit to talk flowers with me and the very sweet older woman who lives behind us came to the back fence with a bouquet of freshly cut flowers for us from her yard. Such a wonderful neighborhood we've moved into- I just can't say it enough.
