courage

I just fell a little bit more in love with my daughter-

Something new at our house in the past few months is a fear of being alone on one level of the house. Both Grace and Luke are terrified to be downstairs if everyone else is upstairs or vice versa. Rational or not, I completely sympathize. I sometimes let my fears get the better of me as well, especially if Ben is out of town.

Gracie, Luke, and I were playing in her bedroom and she needed something downstairs. Usually she would ask me to walk with her to get it. This morning she walked right to the stairs, hesitated for a split second, and started whispering to herself, "Be brave. Be brave. Be brave." as she walked down the steps. Once she reached the bottom step, she sprinted to the playroom to get what she wanted and raced all the way back up the stairs.

Not a major accomplishment, I know, but it sure made me proud.

Tell Gracie "Good job!" I know exactly how she feels. I remember as a kid racing up the basement stairs, convinced that there was someone on my heels. Even now, when Paul is gone, I hate going downstairs to do laundry. Every sound is a crazed lunatic - I still find myself racing up the stairs to get away from somebody! She is a very brave girl!!

I felt the same way when I was little. Looking back now, I am not sure what I was scared of, but it was very real and very scary. I used to be sure that it was OK when the lights were on, but when the lights were off everything broke loose. I used to turn off the light and run as fast as humanly possible up stairs before the boogeyman could run out of the darkness and catch me. She is a good brave girl!

I love how Ben didn't mention his fear of going up to the bathroom alone on College St. That was a major memory of mine as a child because mom would always make me or Bryan take Ben up to the bathroom so he wouldn't have to go upstairs alone. I hated it because I would have to stop what I was doing. Granted that fear was helped along because he watched The Shining with my dad (dads are suppose to make you tough right) but it still was a pain.

My parents had a deep freeze out in the garage where they kept the ice cream. I hated to go out to get the ice cream if it was dark outside. If I was feeling really brave, I'd run to get it by myself, but sometimes I made my mom or dad stand at the back door and watch me. I'm not sure what I thought would happen to me in the thirty steps from the back door to the garage....

I was going to make fun of Ben but Bridget beat me to it. My fear as a little kid was going down stairs to pee when I was babysitting. I always went to the drain instead of the bathroom when I was in charge. I was always sure that someone was looking in the basement window as I was doing my business. If i only would been smart enough to go upstairs it would not have been a problem.

My siblings are liars.
Well I'm glad Bryan and Bridget jumped in with The Shining comment...I would have been scared too! My fear for awhile as a kid was getting into bed at night. I would sort of hop into bed, convinced that someone was lurking under my bed and ready to grab my feet and pull me under! It was probably due to that Twilight Zone episode!
