I've been on checking my email and keeping an ear on Gracie and Luke as they play with stuffies a bit before bedtime. Gracie is playing the mommy of the stuffed animals and Luke must be the host of a playdate of some sort. I just heard Gracie say to Luke,"I'm sorry. I don't know how long we'll be able to stay to play with you today. We are very tired and acting a little wound up. We're going to head home and try for an afternoon rest."

Hmmmm....maybe sleep is too much of an issue with us these days? :)

We're all sun-kissed and happy after a couple of hours at the neighborhood pool this afternoon. Gracie was unbelievable in the water- a little fishy! This is definitely the summer she'll become independent in the pool. Luke enjoyed swimming, but enjoyed playing animals with some other three year olds in the childrens' pool too. He and I traveled from the big pool to the small pool over and over as he kept changing his mind about where he wanted to be.

I'm aware that I feel this way about every age, but Luke really is at a neat age. He is a big kid in some ways, but not quite in other ways. I really enjoy watching him try to figure things out and keep up with Gracie. He's come out of shell so much in the past six months or so; he's hardly the same kid. At Sunday School this morning, he walked right up to a group of boys and said, "I'm Luke. Can I play cars with you?" This is real progress from the little boy who would have been afraid to enter the room a year ago.

And Gracie...my goodness she is getting so big! This afternoon I was watching her swim and giggle with her friend Taylor and another classmate from her preschool class and had the realization, "My little girl is big enough to have friends at the pool!" She thinks of herself as the Second Mommy of our house and loves to help me in any way she can- folding laundry, setting the table, making beds, you name it. Most mornings she picks out her own clothes and requests how she'd like her hair done. She actually got upset with me at dinner the other night when I ordered for her instead of letting her talk to the waitress herself. She has a sleepover in a couple of weeks with two little girls from her preschool. She wants a watch for her birthday and wants me to teach her to tell time before kindergarten starts. She even fastens and unfastens herself into her own car seat now (I'm sure all of you who have to deal with car seats understand that this is a big one!).

I am torn- in some ways it makes me sad that she doesn't need me in some of the ways that she used to, but in most other ways it makes me so very proud of her. There is something bittersweet to watching all of these changes, though, and I can only imagine it will get worse this fall. How big she'll seem to me come September when I have a newborn in my arms!
