uncomfortable~
All right....let me begin by properly setting the stage for this story. It was 3:15 on a very rainy Tuesday afternoon. Grace, Luke, Ana, and I had just walked in the door from picking Grace up at preschool. Luke's pants had gotten wet and muddy, so he had taken them off and was running around the house in his underwear. The entire surface of our playroom floor was covered with toys- no exaggeration. Luke had been searching for one particular toy and had emptied the toy box and many of the toy baskets.
Luke and I had enjoyed popcorn for an afternoon snack right before we left to get Grace, and more of Luke's popcorn had ended up on the kitchen floor than his mouth. I had not had time to sweep yet. The kitchen table was still covered with evidence of St. Patrick's Day activities. The living room was still set up from Gracie's very elaborate tea party the night before- think baby dolls and stuffies on every surface and dress up clothes in a big pile. I had promised Gracie I would leave it out until she got home from preschool. There was a huge pile of library books at the bottom of the stairs. The vaccuum cleaner was in the middle of the kitchen floor because I had been vaccuuming under the cabinets.
Am I painting you a vivid picture of the state of our house at this particular moment?
OK, so, we had just walked in the door and things were hectic. Luke needed dry pants to put on, Ana was hungry, and Gracie wanted me to play tea party with her. In the middle of all this, the doorbell rang and I looked out the window to see an adorable, perky blonde lady on my doorstep, smiling ear to ear.
I opened the door and she said, with such enthusiasm, "Hi!!!!! I'm Monica!!!!!!"
I must have looked confused because she added, "Have you heard my name?!?!?!? I used to live here!!!!!!!"
Then, no joke, she leaned in the door and gave me a hug.
A little dumbstruck, I invited her to step in out of the rain. (Just to clarify- I knew that the person who lived here was named Monica and have heard from neighbors that she was a very nice person. I don't normally let strange people into my home. :))
She came in and began talking a mile a minute. She spoke so quickly that I almost had a hard time following her. Long story short, she was looking for some Fed Ex boxes that are probably going to be shipped to our house by mistake. She was so darn bubbly and friendly that I felt like I was in an SNL skit.
We stood there talking for the longest time. She wanted updates on some of the neighbors and I told her what I could. I told her how much we were enjoying the house and she said that it made her so happy to see another young family in it. She said she had driven by the house dozens of times and had wanted to stop, but didn't have a good excuse. I understood this completely- the last two times we drove by our house in St. Louis, we were aching to go knock on the door too. The whole time we were talking, her eyes kept roaming the house (and our mess, I'm sure).
After about ten minutes, there was another knock at the door. Her husband had been waiting in the car and his curiousity had gotten the best of him. He came in and started peeking around too, even more obviously than his wife. After less than a minute, he said, "Can I just take a look around? Oh, I miss this house!" I wanted to say no, but I just nodded. They both walked into the living room and then the kitchen and just stood there, looking around. It was the weirdest experience and I just kept thinking, "Why was it this moment that they stopped by? My house is never this messy!"
Finally, I asked her for her phone number and promised to call her when her order arrives. She thanked me and said, "I have been praying for your family ever since we sold the home!!!!!!!!! It's so nice to finally meet you!!!!!" Then she gave me a huge hug and left.
As I shut the door, Luke said, "She talks a lot." I laughed and agreed.
So, she will probably be back today or tomorrow to pick up her boxes. You can be sure that when she comes to pick them up, my house will be spotless and my child will have pants on! :)
