stubborn
I took Luke this morning to register him at his new preschool for the 2008/2009 school year. We observed the classroom last week and I loved what I saw- the school is small, the classrooms are colorful, the students we observed appeared to be engaged and having fun, and the teachers were professional and friendly. It has a tremendous reputation and I just feel really good about it.
Luke, on the other hand, is not so excited.
He has been telling me since our observation that he does not want to go to school. I am trying to stay very positive with him about the whole situation. I keep telling him that he will have fun, he will make friends, he will get to hear stories, he will play with toys, etc. I keep hoping that he will decide that he is excited about it.
We drove to the school this morning with Luke protesting the entire way. Once we arrived, Luke refused to get out of his car seat. I took his hand and told him we were just going in for a minute and took him inside. We got in the building and the director remembered us from our visit. She greeted Luke and he glared at her. She asked us to follow her to the office and Luke literally dug his heels into the ground and made me half-pull him down the hallway. He hid behind my leg the entire time I spoke with the director. She walked us toward the classroom that will be Luke's next year- the one he remembered from our visit last week- and he began saying, loudly, "I am not going to school!"
I had mixed feelings about it all- I was a bit embarrassed by his rude behavior and annoyed with him for being so stubborn, but also sympathetic to his fears. I remained completely calm and positive and thanked the director for her help. She was great about it all, sort of laughing it all off. As we left, she patted my arm and said, "He will end up loving it, Mom. Don't worry."
Even when we got back in the car, he continued to protest. He told me, many times, that he will not be going to school next year. He said he doesn't want to make friends and he doesn't want to learn anything new. He will stay home with me, he says. All of this was said with as much attitude as an adorable three year old can muster.
So now we have seven months to get him used to the idea. Wish me luck. :)
