yearning for summer
I'm going to jump back in to posting as if it hasn't been months......
I had lunch with two dear friends yesterday. I swear, sometimes a good talk with people who get you is the best thing around. Our two hours together sitting outside in the spring sunshine fed my soul. Talking with them helped me to begin to clarify some of the feelings I'm having right now.
I'm feeling that same longing for simple that gets me every year at this time. The last month of the school year is just no joke. There are practices and lessons and games and track meets and end of the year concerts and meetings. I'm running around constantly trying to get everyone where they need to be when they need to be there- not always successfully. I am NOT a person who enjoys busy for the sake of busy. It genuinely bothers me that I get so excited when we have a rare night with nothing on the calendar because I know it signals to me that we are overscheduled.
Lately I'm always running 2-15 minutes behind, not because I am not watching the time or goofing off but because I always have one more thing I need to get done in any given moment. Sure it's time to walk out the door for baseball practice, but if I don't switch the laundry right now, the ballet leotard won't be ready when we need it. Yes it's time to walk over to work, but if I just paint another coat on this sign, it can dry this morning and I can have it ready for pick up later. It is time to leave for the meeting, but I can either be late or skip it because I have two kids that need rides at this time. etc., etc., etc. Running behind and always feeling in a hurry is something that really stresses me out.
My friends always tell me I should ask for more help with rides. I have a maybe not healthy aversion to asking for help. I have a running commentary in my head that it is not my friend's problem that my husband travels all week and it is not my friend's problem that we have signed up for so many activities and it is not my friend's problem that we have a big family and it is not my friend's problem that some nights of our week are an exhausting exercise in driving and timing logistics, so it really shouldn't be my friend's job to help with rides.
I am yearning for summer when the schedule slows down. We will still be involved in activities, but summer is an entirely different feel in the Hedenberg home than the school year. And I could not be looking any more forward to it.
