we're here!
After quite a real estate roller coaster ride, we've finally moved into the house we fell in love with last August. I truly never thought this day would arrive.
Life feels a little unsettled right now, which is hard on all of us. I keep hearing "Mom... where is my _____?" Most of the time I do not know the answer. There are boxes everywhere, walls half painted, furniture sitting in weird spots, and piles and piles and piles of stuff everywhere we look.
To add to the fun, I've been unable to do laundry in a week. We are scrounging for clean clothes at this point. The electrician got the dryer up and running yesterday and I was genuinely thrilled with the plan to be able to spend the evening doing laundry, but then the washer wouldn't cooperate. I worry it got damaged in the move.
AND we aren't technically supposed to be living here yet because of all of the electrical work required by the city before an occupancy permit is to be granted, so we're basically squatting in our house. Ben's been gone this week, so once it has gotten dark each night, I've been turning out most of the lights in the house so as not to draw attention to the fact that we are actually here. I do not know what would actually happen if we were to be discovered, but I'd rather not find out. Thankfully, our inspection is tomorrow, so I think/hope this is the last night of feeling like I am breaking the law by sleeping in my own home!
AND there is no fence/electric fence in the yard yet, so Bear must be attached to a chain or walked multiple times a day. He is out of sorts about this and about the electricians who have been here all day every day this week. We are sure he is wondering just how much longer it is until we take him home to our house on Barstow.
AND the boys do not have bedrooms yet. Their rooms are a work in progress (ugly wallpaper and old carpeting), so they are bunking in Katie's room. Katie is bunking in Gracie's room. Ben and I do not have a bed in our room yet either, so since he has been gone all week, I've been bunking in Gracie' room as well.
AND our week has been full of meetings and appointments and youth group and more appointments, so there hasn't been a lot of time to work on settling in. I've been looking forward to this weekend because I thought we would have two days of time to just work on unpacking, but when I finally dug out my calendar this evening, I saw with dread that we have a full Saturday scheduled. boo.
So I just keep plugging along. Each day we are a fraction more settled. Each day I feel a little less stressed out.
This post is written with gratitude for this home and excitement about this new chapter, even if the tone seems more overwhelmed than appreciative. I strive for authenticity on this blog, though, and any rosy post about the move written this week would be false. It's hard for a homebody like me who gets such comfort from her home to feel okay in a week like this where everything feels unsettled. I am trying to find comfort in small moments right now amidst the chaos- a hot shower, a long walk, an afternoon cup of coffee, blogging on the couch at night while the rest of the house is sleeping... these things do wonders.
More coming soon (and pictures), but my eyes are getting heavy and I still have work to do for preschool tomorrow.
I end, though, with a HUGE thank you to Patti and Bryan and my mom and dad. Thank you for coming to spend Easter weekend with us. Thank you for helping in too many ways to list. Thank you for making the weekend a fun memory. We love you.
