this & that
You know you blog a lot when a six day break from posting gets you a couple of questions about your well being. :)
We've been adjusting to our new schedule. School is going pretty well, but everyone is tired and starving once they get home in the afternoon. Drew, especially, is worn out! Adjusting to full days of school is tough when you are five! We mostly take it easy all afternoon, but do still have to complete homework, practice flute and piano, pack lunches and bags for the next day, and do (very minimal right now) chores, so you can maybe guess the moods of some of us by about 7:00 in the evenings.
Drew has been a little hesitant to go to kindergarten for the past three mornings, which is hard on both of us. Today he told me he would rather just stay at home with me. The softie mama in me wanted to scoop him right up and cuddle him all day and the practical mama in me wanted to explain to him all of the many reasons he should want to go. What ended up happening was kind of a combination of these two. He ended up needing walked in for a third day in a row, but was fine once he arrived.
Katie is doing just fine with our new normal. After a couple of days of grouchiness about being left by her people, she has realized that having me all to herself is not such a bad thing. She has been quite content hanging out in the art room with me each morning. Last week I got all caught up with orders for the shop and started on a couple of new items. Katie mastered glitter & glue. I sewed a pair of pants for Katie's first day of preschool. Katie practiced her cutting skills. I reorganized my craft cabinet. Katie learned how to use a hole punch. We were happy crafty homebodies.
I spent two half days up at the preschool last week preparing for the new school year. Katie stayed home with Ben one day and went with me one day. Although she was quite quiet around all of the teachers (pretty typical these days), she did happily stay in one of the classrooms to play while I was off going over some things with the directors. When I ask her about preschool starting next week, she smiles and tells me she will like it. Let's hope so.
This is the time of year for Curriculum Nights and Jump Start Conferences and Back to School picnics, and we've had no shortage of them yet and with more to go this week. No complaints here, though, as I love to attend school events from the parent side of the classroom. I was really impressed with Drew's teacher and feel pretty glad he is in her class this year. She seems so passionate about teaching and you can tell she loves what she does.
Kind of a funny side note about curriculum night this year- the format was changed this year so that there was a 45 minute chunk of time between the kindergarten portion and the fourth grade portion. Another mom and I decided that it would be fun to walk down to the Block (my favorite restaurant in Old Webster and about half a block from the school) and have a drink between the sessions. We had a great time, but because the service was a little slow that night, we practically had to enjoy our drinks as a shot instead and then hurry back to the school. Neither of us are big drinkers, so we were giggling at ourselves as we walked back, joking that we just figured out a way to make curriculum nights a whole lot more exciting!
Our weekend was low key. The kids clearly needed a couple of days to just relax. Movies, video games, board games, a night at the pool with some friends of ours, lunch out on Sunday… it was just the weekend we wanted.
