{littles}
My babes are growing up. No matter how I feel about it, it is happening.
I don't especially love that Drew is off to kindergarten all day, every day this year…... and I don't especially love that the new shoes that Luke got yesterday fit me ….. and I don't especially love that Gracie came home from Sixth Grade Orientation with a homeroom number and a class schedule divided into eight hours…… and I don't especially love that my little baby is old enough to be off to preschool in a few weeks and has started writing letters.
But since I have no control over it, I am really trying not to get too sentimental about it. Most of the time I am successful with this, but sometimes a moment sneaks up on me. As was the case yesterday when these two overpriced stuffed animals made their way home from the Galleria with us:
Ben took the day off for some family fun. We spent the morning at the Botanical Gardens and then went to the Galleria for lunch and back-to-school shoe shopping. We walked by Build A Bear and the kids wanted to go in. We weren't in a hurry so we agreed, but I told them that we were just looking.
But then we got in that cute store and those two littles of mine got so excited by all of the choices. Their faces were so lit up and they were squealing about all of the cute animals. (Also, I should maybe add that I have a complete soft spot for Build A Bear. Katie's beloved Binky Bunny and Drew's beloved Puppy both came from Build A Bear and could not be any more special to our family. Binky Bunny and Puppy are slept with every night.)
As Kate and Drew laughed and touched everything, Kate even jumped up and down at one point. I looked over at Gracie and Luke who were pretty much bored but being good sports about it and had the sad realization that it is just a matter of time before my two littlest will also not be excited about something as innocent as a stuffed animal. To my embarrassment, my eyes teared up. Before I knew it, I was telling my littles that they could each pick out a stuffy to celebrate starting preschool and starting kindergarten.
I got a lump in my throat watching their excitement over the choosing of the animals, the stuffing of the animals, the placement of the special heart deep inside of the animal before it is sewn shut, and the bath that the animals get before they come home. That store just knows what it is doing when it comes to making a neat experience for children. (And I guess for their parents too, since I am blogging about it!)
We left the store the proud family of Lamby and Doggie. Both animals were played with and loved on all afternoon and made their way into the bedtime routine last night.
Oh, Kate and Drew, please stay little. You would make me so happy if you only would. I love older kids and could not be an ounce more proud of my big kids, but I have adored having littles in the family. I will put up with tantrums and potty training and all of the other challenges associated with the age if it meant I could also hang onto the sweet innocence and the excitement for the little things.
