always the case....

I had a hard time getting tired last night after the birthday party ended and so I stayed up incredibly and ridiculously late. As I was blogging pictures and watching The Bachelorette at 1:30 in the morning, I just kept thinking how tired I would be when my 6:00 Drew wake up call came.... and I really was.

We had a low key morning. After lunch, I put Katie down for a rest and then sent the older three upstairs for quiet time. We do this every day, so they are used to it and usually have no struggles with it. They can read, write, draw, play Legos, listen to music or an audiobook, do a puzzle....basically anything that is calm and quiet. After one hour, they are free to come back downstairs or stay up there.  It has become a really nice and calm part of our day. Spending all day every day with one another means that sometimes a little break is a good thing for everyone.

Usually I love the time to recharge myself. Some days I am all about being productive. Some days I am all about taking a mental break from mothering and like to just veg out with a book or magazine. Some days I sew or blog. Today I was just so tired that I thought an hour of a nap for me would do wonders for the rest of everyone's day. :)

With everyone occupied, I thought I had an hour of quiet time to nap on the couch. But, as is usually the case universally for mothers everywhere, the fastest way to insure that my children neeeeeeeed me is to shut my eyes for a moment.

I kid you not, I must have been interrupted ten times in the hour I tried to rest.

I finally gave up and got up. I got the kids set up with a small snack and got everyone occupied with activities- Luke doing an online math game, Drew playing Imaginext, Gracie working on thank you cards, Katie still napping. I treated myself to a chai and then got busy doing laundry, party clean up in the backyard, and continuing an organization project I've been working on all week.

After about another hour, it occurred to me that I had NO interruptions for that entire hour. Not one. Gracie, Luke, and Drew had each finished their individual activities and headed upstairs to the clubhouse closet in Gracie's room.

Go figure.
