Halloween 2018
Despite a little rain, it was a great Halloween. Every year on October 30, I kind of think, "This is so much work for such a middle-of-the-week made up holiday!" Some years- this year being one of them- Halloween feels like it is stretching out into a multi-activity extravaganza. Trunk or Treat, school parade and parties, preschool parade and party, trick or treating, post trick or treating block party..... all to be followed with a regular day of work/school the next day. The morning of Halloween usually has me a little crazed making sure the kids have all of the pieces of their costumes in their school bags, I have my own costume assembled for preschool, I have all of the things I'll need to run multiple class parties, and we have all of the ingredients needed for our traditional Halloween dinner. I mean, is it really Halloween if you don't eat mummy dogs before you go trick or treating? Ben flew home for the day this week to celebrate with us and I was thankful for a partner to help with these tasks. (He even ran mid-day to pick up a salad for us to eat for lunch. It was waiting in the kitchen for me when I walked home from preschool. It was a nice surprise in the middle of the day between preschool teacher stuff and room mom stuff. Love that thoughtful guy.)
After our elementary school Halloween fun, we all were able to relax for a couple of hours at home before Halloween night fun began. Nini came to St. Louis for the night, so we enjoyed hanging out with her. Once costumes were on and mummy dogs were devoured, we got dressed and headed out into the sweetest neighborhood around. I'm noticing that Halloween is certainly changing as the kids get older. They are all transitioning into spending this holiday with friends rather than our family, which is, I guess, the way it goes. sigh. Gracie was with friends at a party all night in a costume she threw together about ten minutes before she left. Luke and his best friend were Doc and Marty from Back To The Future and were excited to be on their own for the evening. We walked with Luke over to Cal's house long enough to snap a picture and visit with his family, and then the two boys were off. We ran into the family of one of Kate's friends and ended up trick or treating with them for the night. Kate and Abby were pretty excited and had hugs and hand holding for one another often throughout the night.
We roamed the neighborhood trick or treating and visiting with neighbors until the rain and darkness called it a night for us, though since we got a solid 1.5 hours in of trick or treating, I don't think anyone felt too cheated. Our neighbors invited a bunch of us into their house around eight and we ended up hanging there drinking wine and talking while the kids traded candy. I looked at my watch around nine and realized that since it was a school night, we definitely needed to call it. We walked home, scrubbed face paint off of our hockey player, peeled out of wet costumes, picked up our teenagers, and called Halloween 2018 a success.
